I don’t drink milk… can you help me out?
First off, I just CAN’T drink milk. the taste is so disgusting that I’ll throw up if I ever drink it again. I can drink chocolate milk, but not white milk. My question is, what should I do about calcium… should I take vitamins? I have yogurt like once a week, but I don’t think that’s enough. If I have a glass of chocolate milk each day, is that enough calcium as white milk would give me?
If you’re not fond of dairy there’s lots of other foods that are calcium rich. Most fruits and veggies have at least a modest amount of calcium. Dark leafy greens like spinach, turnip greens, kale and turnip greens are all rich in calcium, and broccoli too.
There’s always chocolate soymilk (the Silk brand is actually really good). If you’re going to drink chocolate milk for the majority of your calcium then stick to reduced fat or skim (if you can stomach it, I can’t) and add the chocolate syrup yourself. Most of the chocolate milk that you buy at the store in a gallon is whole milk and when they add the chocolate to it, I think the high fat and sugar takes a lot away from the benefits. When you drink or eat dairy products, just try to go low-fat or fat-free when you can.
If it’s too hard working all this in and you’re concerned you’re not getting enough calcium, I’ve tried the Viactiv chewable calcium supplements. I recommend the caramel flavor, quite tasty.
edit: I forgot to mention, I drink the Wal-Mart store brand version of Carnation Instant Breakfast (if you’ve never heard or it, don’t be scared by the name, it’s just a chocolate flavored powder with vitamins and minerals that you mix into milk). The store brand has 100% RDA of calcium when you mix it with 8 oz of milk.
