Newborn and preemie questions…?
I have a couple questions. My baby was born 5 weeks early, and is now 2 1/2 weeks old.
1) My baby’s umbilical cord finally fell off. How soon can you give them a bath in a baby tub after the cord falls off?
2) Anyone have any tips on keeping a preemie awake while breastfeeding? My little girl falls asleep everytime, no matter how awake she was to start with. She’ll eat for about 10-15 minutes, and sometimes longer, but then about 20 minutes after feeding, she’ll start rooting around and wanting more food and cry and cry. I’ve tried tickling her tummy, massaging her hands and feet, and even wiping her down with a cool washcloth while feeding her and nothing fazes her! If you’ve had a preemie, do they get more alert as they reach their actual “due date”?
I have checked my milk flow, and it is very high actually. I do pump also. I have tried to establish a routine. The doctor said to feed her every 2 hours until she reaches her actual due date.
My son was born just over four weeks early. He used to always falls asleep at feedings…always! I promise that it does get better. My son is now 4 1/2 months and acts like a typical 4 1/2 month old. Around one month he started acting more alert and around two months he started waking for good portions of the day.
Your best bet is to just continue to feed on demand whenever she is awake. The fact that she is up for 20 minutes sometime is great! Mine would never stay up for longer then 10 and we tried all the tricks that you described. None of them work for a sleepy preemie newborn. Just keep offering the breast every time you catch her awake. Falling asleep during feedings is very common for all babies, as mother release hormones during nursing that act as natural sedatives for both baby and Mama.
As for your first question. My son had his first real bath on the day that his stump finally fell off.

Edit: please don’t put baby on a schedule or put talc on her body or pump, just feed at the breast often and on demand.
