What do I use in my son’s crib?

My 3 month old son has acid reflux so I have to elevate his mattress in his crib. Currently, he is still in his bassinet but he is almost at the weight limit. I put my son in the crib for not even 5 minutes to get his bath ready and by the time I got back in the room, his head hit the railing and he was crying. I was wondering what do I use on the railings on the crib? I heard bumper pads aren’t safe but what else do I use? I seen those mesh crib bumpers, but do those have any padding when my son hits the railing? I would appreciate any recommendations. Also, how do I make going to the crib a smooth transition?
I forgot to mention the reason my son hit the side was because the mattress is elevated with a flat pillow because of his acid reflux. I need some kind of protection so he won’t hurt himself.

As soon as the baby is able to roll onto his side you need to pull out the bumper pads until they are fully mobile. Disregard the people who tell you they never had issues, and that proves they are safe. Just because most babies don’t get stuck against them and suffocate doesn’t mean yours won’t. Most babies also don’t get killed in car accidents yet we still put them in carseats (our parents used to just put us on the floor).

There’s really no danger of injury from rolling against the wooden slats (they wouldn’t be hit with any real force). You shouldn’t have any soft objects (including the bumper pads) in a crib until the baby can move around at will. Even then you shouldn’t put any blankets or pillows in there until they’re 2.
