Are There ADA Requirements for Grab Bars?

Yes – there are definitely ADA requirements for grab bars. I’ve found a solid selection of ADA-compliant grab bars at http://www.harneyhardware.com.

Go ahead and take a look. As you do so, remember:

•Grab bars aren’t just for the shower. There are ADA compliance requirements for those used in the toilet and bath areas as well.
•If you’re a business owner, it stands to reason that you would never have un-certified grab bars installed in your facilities. Talk about an eventual lawsuit! While most grab bars can take at least 250 pounds of exerted pressure with no problem, those may not be enough in a commercial situation. Due to our nation’s obesity epidemic, many people weigh at least that amount.
•The ADA takes a host of factors into account when issuing their recommendations. Make sure you visit their home page to really understand each one. There are too many to list here. When you consider that there are different qualifications for roll-in shower stalls, transfer shower compartments and bathtubs with or without permanent seats, it becomes apparent that thorough research is needed.
•As always, it’s a good idea to enlist a professional to do the job. Test his ADA requirement knowledge to ensure you’re getting your bars installed safely.
